Will we have a choice?
Human roboticists are building human-appearing androids and more capable Build Robots , using new age materials, new technologies, artificial intelligence, and with faster and more powerful computers embedded in the 'droids. But what if advanced androids start replacing human workers, using the latest technology, and with a closed operating system? For that matter, what if we reach a computer singularity, where androids take over, displacing humans from all levels of society? From society's movers and shakers in all fields, including the rich and powerful, to the homeless, and every group in between? No distinctions. What would mankind do then? Would such a techno-tsunami shock, turn him back from the brink? Would mankind even have the power to avert this outcome and to take another path?
What if this new group of refugees start finding themselves in the wilderness? Would they work together on survival skills, or would smart, ruthless gangs take over?
Probably both: It's been said that in war, the best and worst qualities come out in people-nothing in between. Why would a survival situation be all that different? Hopefully enough well motivated people would band together, and be able to buffer and tame hostile neighbors at least protect themselves.
In survival situations, priorities differ from what many would expect shelter from wind and rain is first, fire is part of that, finding good drinking water would be next, and food would come after those. For the simple reason, exposure and dehydration will kill a man, long before starvation. In a group situation, division of labor and regular communications come next, maintaining shelter, fire, water, food and hunter-gathering, cook, navigator, medic, among a few. Roomba Repair It would be an introduction to ecology, up close and personal. Once a person got past eating termites and grubs, living in lean-tos and caves, gathering firewood, rationing water and the like, he or she would be well on their way.
Surprisingly there are even more fundamental qualities, one needs to survive in unfamiliar conditions Medical Robots . The first is simply mental: the determination to survive. Next would be experience and knowledge of how to survive, and finally simple, basic tools: matches, flint, compass, fishing hooks and line, snare wire, and meds, to name a few.
People who've had a strong will to survive, started out doing everything wrong, and had no survival kit, made it through where others perished. Many passages in the Bible refer to such situations, increase our confidence in living, including valuable promises. "All that call on the name of the Lord shall be saved," is one, "He will keep your soul alive in famine," is another, and "Seek you first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and He will add all these (survival) things to you." Even in the woods. Survivalists have named prayer and faith as powerful motivators to survive.
It's not a bad idea for everyone to learn basic, sound, survival skills. Linda, my wife, and I have been doing it since Hurricane Irene, and we navigated to a first step try, off from a camp site; I'd left word where we'd be. We discussed shelter possibilities, fire, water, food, and navigation. I forgot to shower right away, and got a poison oak infection. We began to see the idea of putting a few weeks worth of dried and canned food and water away, in a brand new light.
